As a member of the National Drama Executive, I champion drama and battle to keep it on the curriculum, so I clearly believe that it matters.
But do we all think that? The existence of the EBacc – with its need for retaining masses of arguments, knowledge and formulae, its centralising of core subjects, and its conservative agenda – suggests otherwise. Maybe PE, art and music will give our children everything important? There's creativity there, and opportunities for competition, enjoyment and skills. Maybe drama is redundant?
So why should we keep championing drama as an entitlement more joyfully, more powerfully than ever? Why should everyone shout about drama, and support National Drama and their kids’ schools to keep drama on timetables?
