Course content

The BA (Hons) Acting for Stage & Screen degree has been designed by working industry professionals to ensure students develop the skills required for performance on stage and screen; it provides students with the drama school style experience outside of London.

To gain a place on the course applicants take part in an audition where students will need to prepare two monologues, one contemporary and one classical each lasting approximately two minutes. The applicants will also take part in a 40 minute physical theatre workshop and an interview. There is no audition fee for this programme.

BA (Hons) Costume Interpretation with Design degree leads the way in producing costumiers for the entertainment industry by equipping students with the skills necessary for the costume industry, as well as teaching custom pattern cutting, design and illustration, corsetry and costume construction techniques. Students also develop skills in leather armour, mask-making, tailoring and millinery (hat making) set in the thriving filming locations of the north-east, with great links to industry leaders in costume with an international reputation.

Standard entry requirements but with a passion for the costume industry.

BA (Hons) Film, Television & Theatre Production is a collaborative and practice-based degree allowing students to develop the skills and discipline of script writing, directing and producing for both stage and screen. Students gain a strong understanding of the technical requirements of filming and stagecraft.

Standard entry requirements and an interest in film and TV.

BA (Hons) Production Design for Stage and Screen. This programme prepares students for the backstage world of theatre, from concept and design to full scale scenic painting and construction.

Entry requirements are drawing and making skills and a love of theatre and performance.

BA (Hons) Visual Effects and Model Making. This programme develops skills in prop and model making for a host of industries but primarily focuses on film, TV and theatre.

Entry requirements are a portfolio of practical skills.

Fees, bursaries, and other finance information

Courses cost £9,250 for a year (courses are three years). Bursaries of up to £1,000 are available for eligible students.

Entry requirements (qualifications)

Our BA (Hons) programmes require 112 UCAS Tariff Points or more.

Due to the creative nature of our programmes, we treat all applications on their own merit and welcome anyone who has the ability and aspirations to achieve at higher education.

If students are predicted points below the stipulated range, or have any other qualifications or professional experience, they should get in touch as we still may be able to consider them.

Usually the majority of applicants will have successfully completed one of the following routes: BTEC/UAL Extended Diploma, Foundation Studies in Art & Design, Access to HE, AVCE, A-Levels, Level 0.

It is expected that all applicants will have a Level Two qualification (or equivalent) in literacy and numeracy.

For mature applicants (i.e. 21+ years), emphasis will be placed on the portfolio review and interview session, which remains an important part of the selection procedure.

Application method

Applications are via UCAS. There is no audition fee for the Acting for Stage and Screen degree programme.

Audition process/preparation required

After we receive students' UCAS forms, an interview will be arranged, which enables them to see the facilities, meet our staff and current students, and view the latest work. It also provides us with an opportunity to discuss the student's portfolio, find out more about them and establish the best degree route for them.
