‘At a time of unparalleled budgetary challenges for schools and specific government cuts, it's been the creative subjects that have deemed to be the easiest targets.’

The blunt observation of Matthew Partridge, the principal officer in recruitment at the National Education Union (NEU), hit home. I had recently been working as a sole drama teacher in a boy's grammar school and due to such ‘unparalleled budgetary challenges’ and ‘specific cuts’ my job had just been axed. As had all drama in the school. So when I set out to meet Partidge at the NEU's offices, I was more than aware of the dangers that drama teachers are facing today.
