Open to anyone aged 11 - 21, the auditions require no previous experience or preparation and consist of a 2-hour creative group workshop led by a professional director, musical director and choreographer. Auditionees will be marked on their acting, singing, dancing and ability to work as part of a team. Those who are successful will be offered a place in one of BYMT’s next season of new musical theatre shows.
Gaining a place offers young people the opportunity to train with theatre professionals, meet with like-minded young people from all over the UK, take part in creating a new musical from scratch, and star in a full-scale musical theatre show in prestigious venues around the UK. BYMT alumni include Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, Charlotte Richie and Laurence Samuels.
Honor, who is 19 and from Dublin, said, ‘What is unique about BYMT is that you are involved in a brand new musical from start to finish. The shows and getting a taste of the industry really showed me how much I love musical theatre and how I want to pursue it as a career. I loved every second of the BYMT shows. The professional standard and environment make each performance feel like you are stepping into a West End/Broadway show.’
BYMT executive producer Jon Bromwich said, ‘BYMT plays a vital role in investing in the future of music theatre. This year has been a real challenge for the arts industry and we can’t wait to get back to normal and see new exceptional young talent in our next exciting season of musical theatre. Each auditionee is carefully observed and graded by top industry professionals, who will see about 1500 potentials resulting in 300 young people being invited into the BYMT company.
‘If successful in their audition, company members will work alongside the industry leading directors, musical directors, and choreographers to build a new musical show from the ground up. BYMT’s new programme for 2021 features eight full productions and some of the biggest titles in theatre, music and literature.’
