Although presented a little differently this year, the acceptance speeches were filled with gratitude and passionate optimism for the theatre, freelance artists and the arts in general, with the winner of Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical, Cassidy Janson for & Juliet, looking directly into the camera and saying, ‘Don’t any of you ever retrain’.
Best Actress went to Sharon D. Clarke for her performance in the Young Vic’s Death Of A Salesman, while Present Laughter at the Old Vic won two awards, with Andrew Scott winning Best Actor and Indira Varma winning Best Supporting Actress.
New musicals Dear Evan Hansen and & Juliet each took home three awards, while the all-female creative team behind Emilia won three awards between them. The new award for Best Family Show went to The Worst Witch at the Vaudeville Theatre.
The Awards are available to watch on Official London Theatre’s YouTube channel, and a highlights show will play on Magic Radio from 8pm until 10pm tonight (Monday 26th).
