National playwriting course and competition launched for years 10 to 13

New Views 2020 has been launched, an annual playwriting competition from the National Theatre (NT) to support the next generation of talent in the UK, this year in partnership with Audible. Both the NT and Audible will work with a young writer aged 14 - 19 to adapt their script and publish it in audio.

Hundreds of students can take part in the online New Views programme, benefiting from workshops, masterclasses and bespoke CPD for teachers. Out of the plays produced on the course, a shortlist of eight will be rehearsed, then one will be chosen to be produced by the NT with a professional cast and crew.

Any school or college can apply to take part, with the programme aimed at years 10 to 13. The cost per state school is £200, although bursaries are available if cost is a barrier to participation. For an independent school to take part, the cost is £400, which includes sponsoring a state school to participate.

Students involved in New Views will have the opportunity to:

  • Explore their talent and sharpen their approach to research
  • Develop and articulate ideas on key ethical questions and dilemmas
  • Engage and respond to the changing world
  • Develop their engagement with theatre and an understanding of the power of theatre to engage audiences in debate
  • Develop transferable skills for employment and further study including self-management, communication, application of literacy and critical engagement with subject material

Joint chief executive of the NT said, ‘Young writers and theatre-makers are the future of our theatre industry and we are committed to supporting the development of new talent by continuing to provide opportunities and platforms for young people right across the UK in these challenging times. We are excited to begin our partnership with Audible to develop brilliant new scripts for their platform and ensure the talented voices of the next generation are heard far and wide.’

Country manager at Audible Kevin Addley said, ‘This exciting partnership with the National Theatre’s New Views programme allows us to help support the theatre at a difficult time for the arts. Discovering and supporting young talent has never been more vital, and we look forward to being able to celebrate new young talent in the coming months.’

Schools and colleges should apply by submitting an expression of interest form, available on the website. The deadline for applications is 7 October 2020
