'Shifting Tides' digital festival from the Almeida starts today

Starting today (Thursday 16 July 2020), the Almeida Theatre hosts an online festival exploring the intersection between art, activism and the climate crisis. 'Shifting Tides' will take over the Almeida's digital platforms from Thursday 16 to Saturday 18 July, and has been created by and for those aged 14 to 25, but everyone is welcome.

The festival will include a new three-part audio drama, panel discussions, film screenings, Q&As, and an online exhibition of new work created by young activists in response to the climate emergency.

All events are free to attend, but registering attendance in advance is essential. The schedule is as follows:

Thursday 16 July

5-5:30pm - 'As Waters Rise' - episode 1 | Audio drama

Friday 17 July

1pm - Panel | Art at the Climate Crisis

2:30pm - 'Extinction' | Film screening followed by Q&A

“So the question is, how do we stop this?”
“The protests? Or the potential extinction of the human race?”

Extinction Rebellion has taken control of the streets. In the midst of this city-wide protest, a group of climate activists meet with a senior MP to discuss their demands.

This short sharp comedy from Jack Cooper Stimpson and Sam Haygarthincludes Academy Award-winner Emma Thompson, Rakhee Thakrar (Sex Education) and Tom Glynn-Carney (The Ferryman).

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with members of the cast and creative team, including actor Charlotte Hamblin.

Saturday 18 July

2:30pm - 'Something Will Disappear' | Film screening followed by Q&A

For every second we fail to listen, something will disappear. Maybe it already has.

The world premiere of this new short film written by Ella Road (The Phlebotomist) is a powerful call to arms to find a new way of living. The cast includes Patterson Joseph, Anjana Vasan and Annie Firbank alongside Almeida Young Company actors.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with members of the cast and creative team.
