Artaud is an ideal practitioner to choose at A level, and this scheme of work provides a thorough
introduction to his work. Starting with Theatre of Cruelty theory, students will discover how, without Artaud, there would be no physical theatre, no strobe lighting, no experimentation with the performance space and spectator position, and no subject material that challenges social taboos. He was the punk practitioner, smashing what had come before him in order to create theatre relevant to all. He believed that all aspects of theatre were vital elements in creating powerfully affecting theatre. Students will discover a theatre designed to shock and disturb, and which reveals the dark, unpredictable nature of existence.
