In this scheme of work, students will explore the style and techniques of verbatim theatre, using real-life interviews as the basis for creating a short performance. They will develop skills in interview techniques, transcription, performance and reflection, and the scheme will also introduce them to the ethics and responsibilities of representing real people on stage, and encourage their sensitivity when working in this way.
By the end of the scheme, students will be able to define and explain the concept of verbatim theatre; transcribe recorded interviews accurately (including hesitations and fillers); select compelling and meaningful lines for performance; identify key themes and moments in real-life speech and confidently use vocal expression (tone, pace, pitch) to reflect authenticity. The scheme will close with students performing a short verbatim theatre piece to an audience.
