Young people to perform 10 new plays at NT’s Connections Festival 2022

Celebrating its 27th year, the festival will take place at the NT’s Dorfman Theatre from 28 June - 2 July.

Ten school groups and youth theatre companies from across the UK will be staging new plays at this year’s National Theatre Connections Festival. 

As part of the festival, 228 youth groups and over 5,400 young people have had the opportunity to stage a production at one of 28 leading partner theatres nationwide. From this pool, 10 companies have been selected to perform at the National Theatre. 

The full list of performances are as follows: 

  • 28 June: Cable Street by Lisa Goldman, performed by Winstanley College (Wigan)  
  • 28 June: Remote by Stef Smith, performed by On Point Theatre Company, Leyton Sixth Form College (Waltham Forest)  
  • 29 June: Like There’s No Tomorrow created by the Belgrade Young Company with Justine Themen, Claire Procter and Liz Mytton, performed by Bristol School of Acting (Bristol) 
  • 29 June: Chat Back by David Judge, performed by LORIC Players from South Wirral High School (Merseyside) 
  • 30 June: Variations by Katie Hims, performed by Theatreworks (Deal, Kent) 
  • 30 June: Hunt by Fionnuala Kennedy, performed by Kensington Arts (Isle of Man) 
  • 1 July: Find a Partner! by Miriam Battye, performed by Best Theatre Arts (St. Albans) 
  • 1 July: You Don’t Need to Make a Big Song and Dance out of it by Abbey Wright, Shireen Mula and Matt Regan, in association with Tackroom Theatre, performed by Suffolk New College Performing Arts (Ipswich) 
  • 2 July: The Ramayana Reset by Ayeesha Menon, with choreography by Hofesh Shechter Mayflower Youth Theatre (Southampton) 
  • 2 July: Superglue by Tim Crouch, performed by Everyman Youth Theatre (Cardiff) 

Rufus Norris, director of the National Theatre said: ‘It is fantastic that young people have been performing in theatres right across the UK as part of Connections over the past few months and we are so excited to have the NT building buzzing with their talent in June for the culmination of the nationwide festival. 

‘We know how resilient and enthusiastic our participants have been over the past year and we’re thrilled to be able to come together to celebrate these emerging theatre-makers at the NT’.
