Age: 7 to adult

Players: Small groups

Time: 10–20 minutes

Skills: Co-operation, Icebreaker

You need teams of between seven and 10 players working in different areas of the room. When you call out a category or statement, each group must sort themselves into a line according to the criteria (for example: youngest to oldest). The first group to finish should clap their hands in a simple rhythm, which you can teach them. Award the group a point if they are in the right order.

Some of the examples below can be done without talking, while others may need discussion, depending on how well the group know each other.

  • The day of the month you were born (from 1–31)
  • In order of your birthday (from 1 January to 31 December)
  • The colour of your hair (from light to dark)
  • Alphabetical order of your first name
  • Your house or flat number
  • The time you woke up this morning
  • The number of brothers and sisters you have (starting at zero)
  • The number of pets you own
  • Your star sign from Aries to Pisces (the signs start from the first day of spring)

Director's tips

You can also play this as a whole-group game, although it will be much harder for members of the group to organise themselves. You will need to give the players a time limit to get into order.
