Five Great Plays that bring history to life

Sunday, October 1, 2023

Each issue of D&T, we bring you five suggested plays for studying or mounting with your students. This issue we look at plays that bring history to life, all of which are published and licensed for performance by Stage Partners.

The Book Women by Rachel Bublitz

Cast: 10f, 4m (possible with a large cast)

Synopsis: During the Great Depression, in a community crushed by the collapse of coal and isolated by the very mountains they call home, a group of determined librarians take to their horses to reach the people of Eastern Kentucky. With a dedication equal to the US Postal Service, these ‘Book Women’ deliver more than the books and magazines they carry in their saddlebags. They bring hopes, dreams and the promise that if we support one another, tomorrow will be better.

Why it's great: As headlines abound regarding book bans in the US, this beautiful and timely story about dedicated librarians celebrates the human spirit and how we can come together in the most amazing ways.

Queens by Kristen Doherty

Cast: 7f, 2m, 7 any (possible with a very large cast)

Synopsis: King Henry VIII is trapped in purgatory, bound to his throne by a sinister Fool and the ghostly Women in White. Here in his gilded cage, he is forced to relive the sins he committed against his queens, mistresses and people of the court, over and over again for an eternity.

Why it's great: This play is a wildly theatrical drama that gives performers roles that they can really sink their teeth into. With the option of either a one-act or full-length version, you can add this crown jewel to your season however it fits best for you.

Trials: The Story of Joan of Arc (and Beth) by James DeVita

Cast: 3f, 4m (possible with a large cast)

Synopsis: Beth's constant clashes with her family make home feel like an emotional battleground. As Beth becomes immersed in a project about Joan of Arc, past and present poignantly intertwine onstage as both conflicted young women face the realities around them – and learn unexpected truths about themselves.

Why it's great: Modern heroine Beth has big emotions reflected in the epic scope of Joan of Arc's story, while Joan's legendary deeds are grounded in the modern family drama Beth faces. Productions get the best of both worlds with plenty of parts for all.

Elephant/Man by Del Martin

Cast: 2f, 2m, 8 any (very large cast possible, 30+)

Synopsis: The story of Joseph Merrick (aka The Elephant Man) comes to life in this highly theatrical retelling featuring an ensemble of performers that share the role of Merrick. Whether on a bare stage or with an elaborate set, this adaptable play shines the spotlight on the vivid inner life of Joseph Merrick, and his relationship with the good Dr Treves. This classic story of the ultimate outcast feels as fresh and as relevant as ever.

Why it's great: By allowing multiple performers the ability to inhabit the role of Joseph Merrick, this imaginative adaptation opens up this iconic part to performers of any race or gender. The simple set allows for the ensemble of players to create the rich emotional tapestry of Merrick's world.

My Brother's Gift by Claudia Haas

Cast: 6f, 4m, 2 any

Synopsis: Based on the remarkable true story of Heinz Geiringer – neighbor and friend of Anne Frank – we follow the story of a young artist and loving brother living in unconscionable circumstances. A trained musician at only 15 and now forced to live in hiding and silence, Heintz turns to painting and poetry to express his everyday terror but hope of the future. Through Heinz's inspired paintings, nostalgic love of life, and his sister Eva's remembrances, we are shown the power of art to offer hope and healing.

Why it's great: Coming off its recent sold-out UK premiere at Solihull School, this remarkable story was crafted with exceptional care by playwright Claudia Haas, who worked closely with Heinz's sister, Eva Geiringer Schloss.
