Guildhall announces new online courses in drama and production arts

Booking is now open for 15 new online courses from Guildhall School of Music & Drama, including a range of sessions in theatre and production arts for young people.

Running from April to July, the courses are a mixture of online versions of the school’s popular short courses, as well as a range of new ones. 

Guildhall has also announced that a number of in-person Summer Schools from July to August are scheduled for 2021, including three Acting Summer Schools. Young people can register their interest now and the school hopes to confirm these in early April. 

The online drama courses available to book now are as follows: 

Acting Intensive for ages 16-17: Online

26 - 30 July, 10.30am - 1pm and 2 - 4.30pm daily

This course offers an insight into actor training. Participants will devise and create their own work, as well as learn how to approach contemporary and classical text. They will work closely with a director to explore practical and vocational training, as well as adapting performance for self-taping and video auditions. At the end of the week, participants will perform in a live sharing, which will be recorded to share with friends and family.

Acting Intensive for ages 18+: Online 

26 - 30 July, 11am - 1pm and 2.30 - 5.30pm daily

This course will give participants an insight into actor training by exploring the fundamentals of acting. Working with a range of tutors, participants will take part in a series of stand-alone, craft-based masterclasses followed by intensive rehearsals, which will culminate in a final sharing. No previous experience is needed, but a willingness and desire to share work is necessary in order to participate fully.

The online production arts courses available are: 

An Introduction to Video Projection Mapping: Online 

12 - 16 July, 10am - 5pm daily

Ages 16+

The course will give participants an opportunity to learn and develop the necessary creative and technical skills to prepare and project video onto a 3D structure using industry standard video projection software Resolume Arena 7. Participants will be introduced to the basic principles and techniques of digital video mapping such as preparing digital content, setting up hardware and keystoning. It’s designed for those interested in video projection, or those who have experience or interest in digital art, graphic design, video editing, technical theatre, or gaming.

Sound Design for Theatre: Online 

19 - 23 July, 10am - 5pm daily

Ages 16+

This course will introduce participants to the practical, creative and technological aspects of sound design and management for the stage. It will cover the purpose and timeline of theatre sound and roles within this (e.g. Sound Designer, Principal Sound Engineer and Sound Operator), as well as an introduction to relevant equipment and software, such as QLab and Pro Tools. The course is suitable for anyone with an interest in sound, its manipulation and use in a theatrical or narrative context.
