The successful applicant will also receive mentoring from established writers and composers, dramaturgical support from a director, and the opportunity to stage their production in a professional regional UK theatre with a cast of around 30 young people.

Applications must be submitted by 16 November 2020 and will be assessed on music, concept, writing quality, lyric content and appropriateness by a panel of five professional practitioners. Interviews will be conducted from 8 - 10 December and the Award winner will be announced on 22 February 2021.

The first NMTA was awarded to writer Rachel Bellman and composer Elizabeth Sybil Charlesworth for The Dickens Girls, which was presented in Ipswich in August 2019 (see image). Alumni of BYMT include Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Charlotte Ritchie.
