Vamos Theatre has announced a new initiative to expand theatre opportunities for deaf young people across the UK.

The scheme entails a series of residences to introduce deaf students to full mask theatre, partnering with deaf organisations and theatre venues.

Led by the company’s deaf practitioners Mary-Jayne Russell de Clifford and Alex Wowak, students who attend the week-long residencies will learn about performing in mask, creating characters, using body language to communicate without spoken word or BSL and devising original theatre.

The project began in September with a residency at Braidwood School for the Deaf in Birmingham, supported by Birmingham Rep.

Vamos Theatre is a National Portfolio Organisation with ACE, and this project is funded by The Barry Jackson Foundation and the Birkdale Trust for Hearing Impaired.
