Grab your notebook and hop on the train – this is one CPD event you won't want to miss! The much-anticipated Music & Drama Education Expo is all set to return to London's Business Design Centre in 2024, taking place on 22 and 23 February.

Every panel, workshop and session has been handpicked by an expert team of programmers, making this a one-stop-shop for drama educators looking to spice up their practice and mingle with other education professionals. As I peruse the event programme, here are some of the highlights that I think you and fellow drama colleagues might be interested in. Warming up

Get ready for an exhilarating start to the event with the a warm-up guided by none other than Carl Smith, the co-founder and original cast member of STOMP. This dynamic session promises an inclusive exploration into the world of rhythm through body percussion. Designed for secondary and primary drama professionals, this workshop is not just a warm-up – it's a creative journey culminating in a short, cohesive performance.

Continue the momentum with ‘Getting our Act Together’, a workshop led by Steve Ball. Scheduled for the Keynote Theatre, this session dives into the vital realm of advocacy and equality in drama and theatre education. It's time to actively promote a curriculum that places drama and theatre education at its core; this is an opportunity for professionals to refine their communication skills with policymakers and politicians.

Practical theory

Unlock the secrets to success for teaching Key Stage 2 theatre with the ‘Successful Approaches to GCSE Drama’ workshop. Aimed at drama professionals and hub leaders, this session is your ticket to take-away tips and best practice approaches to the syllabus. Dive into the intricacies of structuring courses and lessons that empower students to reach their full potential.

For those venturing into the realm of Shakespeare within SEND settings, the ‘Reimagining Shakespeare’ masterclass is a must-attend. Dynamic, active and filled with practical insights, this workshop is tailored for educators in numerous settings. Explore innovative teaching methods, collaborative work and sensory practices to make Shakespeare accessible to all.

Shifting gears to the Seminar Theatre on the same day, ‘Stanislavski: Basics for the Classroom’ offers KS2 drama professionals a blend of engaging discussion, practical examples and useful activities. This session introduces Stanislavski's techniques, providing practical exercises and insights on incorporating the system into school settings.

Advocating for your subject

As we move into the second day of the event on February 23rd, the ‘Raising the Status of Drama in Your School’ workshop invites attendees to a mentoring and planning session. Reflect on the current standing of drama within your school, explore strategies to elevate its importance, and discuss realistic short- and long-term plans.

Concluding the Expo on a high note, ‘Planning for Drama in the Primary Classroom’ is a not-to-be-missed interactive session in The Space. Tailored for primary professionals and leaders, this workshop introduces an eight-stage drama planning process with comprehensive resources to seamlessly integrate into your classroom practice and curriculum design.

Music & Drama Education Awards

Having once again synced up with the Expo for 2024, the MDE Awards will be announced at a gala ceremony on the first evening of Expo – 22 February. The nominations are closed and the shortlist has been revealed, so come along to find out the winners and celebrate performing arts education. I for one can't wait to see many familiar faces across the sector and give back some extremely worthy awards.
